Baywood Historic Resource Survey Begins

San Mateo Heritage Alliance conducted an initial study of the Baywood neighborhood to determine if it is eligible for listing as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places (National Register).  Richard Brandi, architectural historian, conducted the initial reconnaissance and literature search to make that determination. He concluded that Baywood qualified as a historic district under two National Register criteria.

The next project is to complete the study and prepare the historic district nomination for the Baywood neighborhood in San Mateo. The Baywood study area and potential historic district is bounded by Crystal Springs Road, Eaton Road, Virginia Avenue, Edinburgh Street, Notre Dame (formerly Cemetery Road), and Alameda de las Pulgas (formerly Park Boulevard). The scope of work includes:

  • Conduct meetings to inform the Baywood residents and answer questions

  • Survey and document the Baywood neighborhood as an historic district

  • Finalize the extent of the historic district

  • Identify structures and elements that are contributors to the district

  • Identify structures and elements that are not contributors to the district

  • Complete and submit a National Register historic district nomination form for the Baywood Historic District to the California Office of Historic Preservation (OHP)

  • Respond to comments and questions from the OHP

  • Identify and catalog individually significant historic structures within the study area

  • Provide a methodology template for future studies for additional potential historic districts in San Mateo

The work is expected to be completed in summer 2023.
